Performed the first heart transplant in Dominican Republic

The history of medicine in the Dominican Republic has a new milestone. This is the first heart transplant in the country, and it was conducted by a team of doctors at the Hospital General Health Plaza.

The information was released by the chairman of the board of the center, Julio Amado Castanos Guzman. He said that the beneficiary is a 22-year-old, identified as Estefany Moreno Vargas, mother of two children, who lives in Sabana Perdida.

The procedure was performed using the classic technique yesterday Shumway type. She had a history of postpartum dilated cardiomyopathy, two years of evolution, who was in heart failure NYHA functional class III-IV.


The patient was admitted several days and she was waiting the transplant center, but according to doctors who attended her, said that she is evolving satisfactorily.

The medical team was composed of 25 people, including 16 specialists.
